Chapter 1 Synthesis

Intervening in the life of a child to balance a learning, emotional or behavioral disability provides an opportunity for the child to become a successful adult. As a secondary teacher, my district does a great job in determining the students who have these learning and emotional disabilities at an early age.  I work hard to provide a bridge for that student to the general math classroom.  Many students who have been in a self contained setting through most of school and move out freshmen year are in my classroom.  My administration knows I will work hard to find ways of closing the gap for these students.

I feel an area I lack in intervention is when a behavior can not be dealt with immediately.  I sometimes ignore a behavior or see if a behavior adjusts on its own, but students with academic or behavioral issues must be treated differently but fairly.  I also believe I could improve my observations of behavior and learning and the way I report those.  Much of my collaboration with academic assistance teachers is spent on whether a concept is learned.

From the weaknesses listed above, I should spend more time correcting the behavior instantly in addition to spending time explaining behavior issues, even non - interrupting behavior, with the academic assistance teacher.  Reflecting daily is a great way to continually work to improve myself as a teacher.
