High incidence disabilities represent a large portion of disabled students in the inclusive classroom. I feel I possess some strengths in working with these students. I try to teach test taking strategies to eliminate answers and make the problem more manageable. I also incorporate as often as possible real world activities. Something as simple as using ActivExpressions keep students engaged longer in the lesson.
One of my weaknesses in dealing with high incidence disabilities lies with ED students. ED students often show a lack of persistance that I sometimes view as laziness and not directed to the disability. I feel that I am better able to adapt my lesson in Algebra 2 than in Algebra 1 if I feel there is no understanding. I have taught Algebra 1 for 8 years. I can anticipate most questions that will be asked and answer them in my lecture. But sometimes I don't allow for the independent thinking of the students so that they can form those questions in their minds.
To work on my weaknesses and improve my strengths, I plan to continue reflecting. By reflecting, I am able to analyze what worked and what didn't, and formulate a plan for the next class. I also want to provide more review for my students with these disabilities so that I can consistently connect knowledge to previous learning. As I work with the academic assistance teachers, I know this last step will become a successful one.
